Welsh Farmer Islwyn Owen Found Dead in Slurry Tank After Going Missing in Gwynedd

Llanycil, Gwynedd – The farming community is mourning the loss of Islwyn Owen, a 67-year-old farmer from Gwynedd, who was found dead in a slurry tank after being reported missing earlier this month. Owen, a well-known figure in the local agricultural scene, disappeared on the evening of September 4, 2024, and his body was discovered just ninety minutes later in a slurry tank on his farm.

An inquest into Owen’s death has been initiated, with coroner Kate Robertson expressing her belief that the circumstances surrounding his death are unnatural. She confirmed that Mr. Owen was found in the slurry tank and pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.

Local council members and residents have expressed their shock and grief. Alan Jones Evans, a councillor for the Llanuwchllyn ward, described Owen as a "conscientious and busy farmer" who was deeply respected in the farming community. He added that Owen was well-known for his dedication to agriculture, regularly attending agricultural shows and events in the area. His sudden passing is seen as a significant loss to both his local community and the wider farming community.

Authorities, including the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), are investigating the incident to better understand the events that led to Owen’s tragic death, which has raised concerns about the safety standards within the farming industry.

Tributes have poured in from friends and community members on social media, remembering Owen’s contributions to agriculture and the local area. On Facebook, Sally Lloyd shared, “Really sad news,” while Jonathan Gray commented, “Not a good way to go. RIP.” Others, including Alison Elizabeth Smith, expressed their sorrow, stating, “How absolutely dreadful. So very sorry for his family,” and Carolyn Ashley wrote, “May he rest in peace.”

Owen’s untimely death has left a deep void in the community, with many still in shock as the investigation continues.
