Portland, Oregon – Stephen K. Prescott, a longtime funeral director and respected community member, passed away at his residence on Sunday, September 22, 2024. He was 56 years old. Born on September 9, 1968, Stephen was a dedicated member of the Portland community, known for his contributions through various local organizations and his involvement in family-run businesses.
Stephen worked as a funeral director at Baird-Freeman Funeral Home for 38 years, a role in which he touched countless lives. He also operated Jay County Monuments and Mrs. P’s Kitchen alongside his two children, while single-handedly managing Prescott Cattle Company. A graduate of Jay County High School in 1986, Stephen was active in sports, participating in football, baseball, and wrestling before pursuing his education at Mid-America Mortuary School.
In addition to his professional roles, Stephen was deeply involved in the community. He was a devoted member of Zion Lutheran Church and actively participated in organizations such as the Scottish Rite, the Shrine, and Jay Lodge #87. He also served on the board of the Jayland Trotting Association and contributed to the local 4-H program.
Stephen is survived by his two children, Colton and Hunter Prescott, both of Winchester; his mother, Linda Prescott, of Portland; his brother Bob Prescott and wife Laura of Peru; his sister Rogina Prescott and her boyfriend Gene Steveson; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jane Noe, whom he married on April 21, 1990.
A funeral service will be held at Baird-Freeman Funeral Home on Friday, September 27, at 10 a.m., officiated by Pastor Randy Smith. Stephen will be laid to rest at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. A viewing will take place on Thursday, September 26, from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Jayland Trotting Association or the Randolph Central FFA.
