Waterloo, Iowa – Kerry Burt, a former Iowa representative and dedicated firefighter, tragically passed away on September 30, 2024, surrounded by loved ones.
His untimely death has left a profound void in the community he served so passionately.
A proud native of Waterloo, Burt was not only recognized for his political contributions but also for his remarkable athletic career as a standout defensive back at the University of Iowa under the legendary coach Hayden Fry.
Burt’s political journey began when he successfully ran for the 21st District seat in the Iowa House of Representatives in November 2008, taking office on January 12, 2009.
However, his time in office was marred by controversies, including a DUI arrest and legal issues related to tampering with school records, ultimately leading to his decision not to seek re-election.
Prior to his political career, he showcased his athletic talent as a professional player for the Maryland Commandos in the Arena Football League in 1989.
The Waterloo Fire Rescue expressed their condolences on Facebook, stating, “Kerry made his mark as a dedicated firefighter and beloved member of our community.”
Mandy Peyton remarked, “Thoughts and prayers to Kim, the kids, and his entire family and fire family. Thank you for your service, RIP Kerry.”
Kerry Burt is survived by his family, and his legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire those who knew him.
