Calgary, Alberta – John J. "Jack" Nearing, a beloved educator and former superintendent, passed away peacefully in hospice on October 2, 2024, at the age of 92.
Nearing, who fought a brief but courageous battle with cancer, was surrounded by his children and grandchildren in his final weeks.
His passing marks the end of a life dedicated to education and community service, particularly within the Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools, where a school was named in his honor—J. J. Nearing Catholic Elementary School.
Jack Nearing’s contributions to the school district left an indelible mark on the community, with many recalling his wisdom, compassion, and humility.
Donna Fed, a former staff member, reflected, "He was a gentleman in the highest sense of the word and a leader with great wisdom, intellect, compassion, and humility."
Other tributes flooded social media, with Luella Jersak Krueger stating, "It was an honour to meet him when my children attended JJN."
The school community expressed their sorrow, with many offering thoughts and prayers for the Nearing family during this difficult time.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
