Missouri Valley, Iowa – The community mourns the loss of Jim McCurley, a beloved Logan native, educator, and coach, who passed away on September 17, 2024, at the age of 77.
Jim was born on April 29, 1947, in Logan, Iowa, to James and Miriam McCurley. He graduated from Missouri Valley High School in 1965 before pursuing higher education at Iowa State University and Wayne State College, where he earned a degree in Secondary Education with a focus on Math. His teaching career spanned several schools, including Springfield/Platteview High, Cathedral High, and Bedford High School.
Jim’s passion for athletics, particularly wrestling and cross-country, led him to a career as a coach and referee. He was also a devoted supporter of Logan Magnolia athletics, attending countless games and events. His presence in the community extended beyond sports, as he volunteered with Meals on Wheels and worked at Menards in Council Bluffs.
Known for his love of biking, running, and bowling, Jim also participated in numerous road races and marathons throughout his life. He was an avid baker, delighting his friends and family with homemade pies and cookies.
Jim is survived by his sister, Ann Dowling, his brother, Gene McCurley, and numerous extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Dale, Kevin, and Donald.
Tributes from friends and community members poured in on Facebook, where Jim was remembered for his unwavering support of local sports teams and his friendly, competitive spirit. Kimberly Kuhl shared, "Jim was an avid Panther fan! It won’t be the same not seeing him in the stands, but I guess now he’s got the best seat in the house. Rest in peace, Jim."
Other heartfelt messages echoed the sentiments of loss. Linda Hennessy commented, "Such a big fan. Always enjoyed visiting with him at church or at events. He will be missed," while Stacey Loftus simply remarked, "How sad! He will be missed!"
